教学目的:
通过课堂讲授、课内讨论等方式让学生掌握文体学的基本概念和理论,了解文体学这一领域中已有的研究成果,掌握文体学的研究方法。本课程要求学生阅读参考书目,写出读书报告及课程论文。

1. Introduction (Lecture: 3hrs)
What is stylistics?
Concepts of style
The needs for stylistics
Debates about the methods and purpose of stylistics
Assignment: prepare 5-mins talk on basic knowledge of stylistics
2. Linguistics, Literary Criticism and Stylistics (Lecture: 3hrs)
Linguistics and literary criticism
Linguistics and stylistics
Literary criticism and stylistics
Stylistics as an intermediate between linguistics and literary criticism
Assignment: read some reference books on stylistics
3. Types of Stylistics (Lecture:3hrs)
Literary stylistics
Formal stylistics
Functional stylistics
Discourse stylistics
Social, historical and cultural stylistics
Assignment: read some books about structural linguistics, transformational-generative grammar, systemic-functional grammar, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and historical linguistics
4. Style : Foregrounding and Deviation (Lecture:3hrs)
Introduction
Shklovskij: Defamiliarization
Mukarovsky: Foregrounding
Leech: Deviation
Poetic language and standard language
Assignment: literature survey on foregrounding and deviation.

Sound patterning
Stress and metrical patterning
Conventional forms of metre and sound
Graphological device
Assignment: 2 poems for analysis
7. Style in Fiction (Lecture:6hrs)
Introduction
Language and the fictional world
Mind style
The rhetoric of text
Conversation in the novel
Speech and thought representation
Assignment: 2 passages for analysis
8. Style in Popular Texts(Lecture:3hrs)
Introduction
Exploiting patterns in sound and meaning: headline texts
Lexical creativity
Targeting the reader
Reference and deixis
Transferring meaning: metaphors in advertising
Assignment: 3 advertisements for analysis
9. Seminar(5hrs)
l Topic: What can stylistics do?
Assessment
The course will be assessed by a 3000-word paper with the aim of assessing the students’ mastery of the basic concepts and models discussed in the course and their competence of conducting practical stylistic analysis. The paper should be completed and submitted by the end of the course.
Attendance and Participation
Regular attendance and active participation are critical to the learning process. If a student should miss a class, s/he is obliged to contact the teacher before the missed class or call the secretary in charge to leave a message. The said student is responsible for finding out about and making up any missed assignments.
