教学目的:

比较系统地掌握语言学中的基本理论观点和研究方法。通过撰写读书报告、学期论文,锻炼研究的能力。与此同时,逐步发现自己所感兴趣的学科和专题。

Contents:

1.  Introduction (Lecture: 2hrs)

           Definitions of language

           Linguistic studies: objects, methods and limitations

           Assignment: a 5-mins talk on features of language

2.       Phonology (Lecture: 4hrs)

           Phonetics

           Phonemes

           Assignment: phoneme marking

3.  Syntax (Lecture:6hrs)

           Structural syntax

           TG syntax

           Functional syntax

     Assignment: tree analysis

4.  Semantics (Lecture:4hrs)

           What is meaning?

           Formal semantics

4.3 Cognitive semantics

Assignment: literature survey on paradigms

5.  Seminar(2hrs)

l          Topic: Connectionism vs. compositionality

6.  Pragmatics and discourse analysis (Lecture:4hrs)

           Context

           Pragmatic approach

           Discourse approach

     Assignment: 2 poems for analysis

7.  Seminar(3hrs)

l          Topic: Logical principle and its flouting

l          Topic: Bottom-up vs. Up-down

8.  Schools and its applications (Lecture:6hrs)

           Natural language understanding

           Language teaching

           Assignment: 2 researches for analysis

9. Seminar(1hr)

l          Topic: What do we learn from linguistics?

Assessment

1.  A written examination – mastery of the basic knowledge

2.  Paper writing – the ability in research

3.  Regular attendance – the motives in studies

Attendance and Participation

Regular attendance is necessary. Active participation is essential to develop the critical ability in linguistics research. Any assignment missed should be made up.
